$50 for a ‘plot’ of land in the Bronx
We like books with a story and these books have a funny one. This handsome set was once owned by a man named Thomas H. Raywood Jr.
Raywood made it into The New York Times in 1903 when he purchased an extremely small plot of land in the Bronx for $50.
“The ‘plot,’ which is a small triangle, has frontages of 1.62 feet on Timpson Place, 1.96 feet on Whitlock Avenue, the other side being .77 of a foot,” the Times reported. “Competent mathematicians have figured that this ‘plot’ contains considerably less than one square foot.”
Raywood’s triangle plot is probably worth a lot more than $50 now. But you can own both of Raywood’s books — “Reading: An Essay” by Hugh Walpole and “Talking: An Essay” by J.B. Priestley — for $25.
