About Nixon’s Gamble: “[Locker’s] well-conceived thesis is that Nixon believed the entrenched, self-interested forces of Washington—the national press corps, Congress, and the CIA, FBI, and Pentagon—were making it impossible for him to achieve his goals: reaching an arms agreement with the Soviets, establishing a détente with China, and ending the Vietnam War. Determined to succeed at any cost, Nixon stealthily created a shadow government adept at secret foreign policy initiatives.” — via Publisher’s Weekly
About the author: Ray Locker is the Washington enterprise editor for USA TODAY, where he supervises the investigative work in the organization’s Washington bureau. He has been the paper’s White House and politics editor and national security editor in the 10 years since joining USA TODAY in 2005.
His work as an editor and reporter was nominated for Pulitzer Prizes in 2008 and 2010. He led a team of reporters that highlighted the Pentagon’s failure to procure armored vehicles that protected U.S. troops against roadside bombs in Iraq and Afghanistan. Defense Secretary Robert Gates has repeatedly cited that reporting as why he made procurement of armored Mine Resistant Ambush Protected (MRAP) vehicles his top priority, and Pentagon officials estimate that MRAPs saved the lives of 40,000 U.S. troops.
Before joining USA TODAY, Locker ran the Associated Press bureau in Sacramento and coordinated the news service’s coverage of California government and politics, including the 2003 recall campaign that led to the election of Arnold Schwarzenegger. He worked for the Los Angeles Times and spent 13 years as a reporter, columnist and editor at The Tampa Tribune. He covered the final years of George Wallace’s political career at the Montgomery Advertiser in Alabama, where he reported on improprieties at a greyhound track that led to a federal corruption conviction.
Locker is a graduate of the University of Cincinnati and Ohio University. He and his family live in North Bethesda, Md.
Praise for Nixon’s Gamble: “’Why did he do it?’ has long been one of the great questions of the Nixon presidency. Ray Locker provides a set of fascinating new answers, based on dogged investigative research and a keen instinct for making sense of Richard Nixon’s strange secret world.”—Beverly Gage, professor of American history at Yale University
“Ray Locker has assembled a masterful study that asks a question no one else has – was the Nixon White House flawed by design? A deep dive of government documents and primary sources, Locker examines the very foundations of the Nixon administration and finds something very troubling. A must read for anyone wanting a better understanding of the time period.”— Luke A. Nichter, co-author of New York Times bestselling series The Nixon Tapes: 1971-1972 and The Nixon Tapes: 1973“The story we only thought we knew. Ray Locker gives us back our lost perspective on Richard Nixon and the governance we inherited from his tragedy. This courageous, graceful book is a major achievement and lasting public service.” — Roger Morris, author of Richard Milhous Nixon: The Rise of an American Politician
