Now Hiring: Bookstore Manager/Clerk
Riverby Books Capitol Hill seeks to hire a full-time bookstore manager/clerk. The ideal candidate will be available to start training in January 2018.
The day-to-day operation of the DC shop is essentially a 1-person job, although the full resources of the Fredericksburg location are at its disposal. The list of responsibilities is incomplete, but includes:
- opening and closing the store.
- retail sales.
- making displays.
- organizing the sections.
- buying books.
- listing books on the internet.
- processing internet orders/shipping.
- maintaining social media accounts.
- making book buying house calls.
- hauling boxes.
- ordering supplies.
- working as a liaison with various family businesses located next door.
- traveling to auctions (nearby).
- supervising part-time employees.
- serving tea in the afternoon.
- maintaining the look and feel of the store.
- enduring a 8 hour day without a formal break away from the dirties of the store.
Riverby survives in the world of Amazon because of the personalities of the people who work there & the ambiance of the store. The books are well-curated, fairly priced, and organized. The manager of the shop is the one who must make all that happen. It requires someone who is good with people, who loves books, who manages their time well, who is responsible with cash, and who can find the balance of taking initiative and working with the owner in keeping the lights on in a family-run business.
Salaried $30,000. Five consecutive days. Store is open 11-7. Manager should expect to be there 10:45-7:15, with the expectation that additional hours may be required as well (trips to donate books, buy supplies, run to the post office, etc.)
Riverby Books opened on Capitol Hill in the summer of 2001. It is a community bookstore in the fullest sense of the word. We operate on a small scale; one customer at a time, both on Capitol Hill and as far as the internet will reach. It is well established as Capitol Hill’s most charming bookstore (we take ‘charming’ to be the highest praise people can think to lavish on a shop that takes so much energy, expertise and enthusiasm to run).
We have another shop in Fredericksburg, VA – opened in 1996. The stores were opened by Steve Cymrot and Paul Cymrot; father and son. Paul now runs them both. He is based in Fredericksburg, and travels to DC when needed and sometimes when not needed.
Please submit a resume to email@example.com tailored to show us relevant experience. Be aware that we often do not read past a poorly crafted “Objective” section.
